The Edmonton Oilers goaltending situation is at an all-time low and now NHL analyst Jason Gregor has suggested a bold plan to help get back on track.

After a Stanley Cup Finals run filled with goaltending controversy the Edmonton Oilers fired goaltending coach Dustin Schwartz as they look to overhaul their approach.
On top of firing Schwartz, many have expected the Oilers to make a personnel change as well potentially moving on from Calvin Pickard.
However, to this point in the offseason, Calvin Pickard remains an Oiler with no move on the horizon to switch things up.
If the Oilers are going to run it back with Pickard and Skinner NHL analyst Jason Gregor has challenged GM Stan Bowman to make a bold move in support of his goaltending tandem.

NHL Analyst Challenges The Edmonton Oilers To Use A Bold New Coaching Strategy

When discussing the Oilers goaltending situation Gregor suggested that the Oilers should create a goaltending department within their coaching staff.
This would consist of a director of goaltending and then several coaches underneath that director enlisted to help develop Skinner and Pickard.
But I believe the Oilers need to do more than just hire a goalie coach. They should build a legitimate goalie department - one that has a goalie director and then two or three more people in the department. The Oilers are one of the top revenue generating teams in the NHL and now is not the time to be cheap out on a goalie department.
According to Gregor if the Oilers went this route they would be on the cutting edge of goaltender development joining just a few teams with an extensive goaltending staff.
From talking to people in the goaltending community teams like Anaheim, Calgary, Colorado, Florida (biggest department), L.A., Montreal (role not as defined, but have extra body), Nashville, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh, Toronto and San Jose have bigger departments. New Jersey still has four people, although Scott Clemmensen left last year and wasn't replaced.

It is crystal clear that something needs to change with the Edmonton Oilers approach to goaltending.
If the Oilers intend to run it back with Skinner and Pickard then that change must come from the coaching staff and adding several voices to the dicussion could be just what the organization needs.
