The Blackhawks have placed former Oilers and Jets goalie Laurent Brossoit on waivers, and the Stars have waived a former Penguins defenseman, too.

Former Jets and Oilers goaltender Laurent Brossoit was placed on waivers by the Chicago Blackhawks, as confirmed by head coach Jeff Blashill. If unclaimed, he will return to AHL Rockford.

The injury issues that have limited Laurent Brossoit's action

Brossoit, 32, has struggled with injuries since signing a two-year, $6.6 million deal with Chicago in 2024. Knee and hip procedures sidelined him for all of the 2024-25 season and delayed his start this year.
He made his first appearance in over a year with Rockford on December 5, recording a 2-1-0 record, a 3.39 goals-against average, a .900 save percentage, and even scoring a rare goalie goal.
Before joining the Blackhawks, Brossoit had back-to-back standout seasons as a backup, including a .927 save percentage. Despite his recent setbacks, his Rockford performance shows he remains an NHL-caliber netminder.
Chicago's roster is now set with Spencer Knight and Arvid Soderblom as the primary goaltenders, leaving no room for Brossoit. Teams have 24 hours to claim him off waivers, taking on his $3.3 million cap hit.

Why teams may be willing to take a chance on Laurent Brossoit

His actual salary this season is $2.3 million after a $1 million signing bonus, which could make him an attractive depth option for teams with cap space.
As a former Jet and Oilers goalie with recent playing action, Brossoit could find a new NHL home if a team is willing to absorb his contract.
A former Penguins defenseman was also waived today, as the Dallas Stars placed Vladislav Kolyachonok on waivers.
The Red Wings also waived a player today, placing forward Jonatan Berggren on the wire, exposing him to all 31 other teams.
The waiver window provides a chance for another team to add a veteran goalie with playoff experience and proven backup success. If not, they also have the option to claim a young forward or defenseman.
