K'Andre Miller sat alone on the Carolina Hurricanes bench Friday night with his newborn son Kashton in his arms.
The arena had emptied after a 6-1 closeout of the Montreal Canadiens in the Eastern Conference Final. Miller wasn't celebrating or chasing cameras.
He was sitting still with his four-week-old, staring into a silent building after punching Carolina's ticket to the Stanley Cup Final.
A year ago, New York Rangers fans celebrated Miller's departure. The sign-and-trade to Carolina last July drew reactions ranging from relief to outright dismissal.
Chris Drury shipped him out for Scott Morrow, a conditional first-round pick, and a second-rounder. Miller had been inconsistent and the front office viewed him as expendable.
The trade tree tells a different story now
Carolina signed Miller to an eight-year, $60 million extension and bet on his ceiling. That bet is paying off at the best possible time.
He leads all Hurricanes defensemen in playoff scoring and owns a dominant expected goal share this postseason. The Rangers missed the playoffs entirely.
The conditional first-round pick New York received loses value with every Carolina win.
The franchise that deemed Miller expendable is watching him anchor a Cup Final blue line.
Fatherhood arrived at the perfect moment
Kashton was born May 2, right in the middle of the playoff push. Miller told NHL.com that coming home to his son after games has been a dream come true.
That context is what makes the bench image hit differently. This isn't just a player savoring a conference final win.
It's a father who was told he wasn't good enough by one organization, found his footing in another, and now holds his son in an empty arena while the Stanley Cup Final waits.
The Vegas Golden Knights are next and Rod Brind'Amour's group looks ready.
