In an ideal world Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving would not want to package their 1st round pick for a rental, or even use it at all. But it was revealed that he is willing to treat it for a bigger package than just a rental.

Treliving willing to trade first round pick under circumstance

32 Thoughts Podcast, on Toronto: They are willing to trade their 2024 1st but hoping to package with something instead of just a 1st for a rental.

What the Maple Leafs GM means is that he would like to give up the first round pick for someone with term instead of a rental like a guy with one year left on his deal.
We've seen the leafs trade their first round pick for rentals and it never turns out well in their favour. For example, in 2021 Nick Foligno got traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs from the Columbus. Blue jackets for a first round pick , the leafs would then get eliminated in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Montreal Canadiens and would eventually lose Nick Foligno in the same summer.
Examples of players the Leafs GM can acquire with term on their contract are Josh Anderson, Travis Konecny, Jakob Chychrun and many more.
It makes sense for the Leafs as they always tend to lose their rentals right after the playoffs finish.
More details to come.
