Josh Morrissey left Team Canada’s Olympic hockey opener hurt, and Winnipeg Jets fans just felt that familiar gut punch.
Morrissey will not return tonight, per Elliotte Friedman on Hockey Night in Canada.
This happened Thursday during Canada’s game against Czechia at the 2026 Olympics.
Morrissey went to the room earlier, and the bench vibe shifted fast once he disappeared down the tunnel.
When a top defenceman exits mid-game at best-on-best, everyone starts doing the math.
For Canada, it matters because his minutes are usually the “calm the chaos” minutes, the first touch on breakouts, the clean exit when forechecks get heavy.
For the Winnipeg Jets, it’s even louder, because the entire blue line identity leans on him.
Morrissey has 10-32-42 this season, and he’s still the heartbeat of their puck-moving.
Josh Morrissey puts the Winnipeg Jets on edge
Jets fans are allowed to be tense here, because we have all watched one awkward Olympic moment turn into weeks of lineup juggling.
If he can’t take his normal shifts, Canada’s pairs get stressed, and the power-play quarterback options shrink in a hurry.
And if this lingers, Winnipeg’s stretch drive gets scary, because replacing his pace and decision-making is not a simple next-man-up thing.
The Jets sit at 22-26-8, so they cannot afford to lose their best stabilizer for any length of time.
Now it’s about the next update, not the replay, and whether he’s available for Canada’s next game.
Until then, all you can do is hope it’s precautionary, and that the door opens with Morrissey back on skates.
