With the imminent return to action of forward Evander Kane, the Oilers have a huge puzzle to solve in order to create the necessary space under the salary cap to allow for the reactivation of his contract.
Currently, they only have $1.64 million available under the cap to reactivate Kane's $5.125 million. So it will take some magic from team GM Ken Holland to fix the situation.
According to reputable site PuckPedia, the Oilers will have to do this:
To activate Kane, the Oilers could be reduced to exactly $0 in maximum space in LTIR with a roster of 21 active players by :
- Sending a player into the minors making $1.125M+ (Ryan/Janmark/Puljujarvi/Foegele, etc.)
- Send Shore to the minors ($850K)
- Send Desharnais to the minors ($763K)
- Put Murray (750K) on LTIR
That's a lot of players that will have to move from the current roster, being sent back to the AHL, while leaving those players exposed to the draft.
