Patrick Roy: An Unquestionable Legacy

Patrick Roy, a celebrated member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, does not need to establish his reputation any further. His performance in the NHL firmly places him as a contender for the title of the greatest goaltender of all time.

This season, Roy demonstrated his prowess again by leading the Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL to win the Memorial Cup Championship. However, he confesses that his previous departure from the NHL executive role might hinder his chances of occupying a similar position again.

Admitting Past Mistakes

Roy candidly acknowledges the repercussions of his abrupt exit from the Colorado Avalanche. He is not blind to the bad choices he made in the past, nor the negative impression he left when he resigned from his post.

He expressed his regret, saying:

"It's hard for me to get a job because of the way I left Colorado. I know I made some bad choices. I know the way I left, everything I did, could have an effect on today's perspective on myself. I have to live with that. I know that I've learned from my mistakes. The past is the past but sometimes, you have to live with your past. I understand the situation."

A Gap Between Visions

After his stint with the Avalanche, Roy took up the roles of head coach and GM of the Remparts. He resigned abruptly from his position as coach and vice president of hockey operations with the Avs in 2018. According to Roy, there was a discrepancy between his vision for the team and that of Joe Sakic, the then Executive Vice-President and General Manager for Colorado.

Sakic has since been elevated to the President of Hockey Operations. Reflecting on his past experiences with Colorado and Sakic, Roy conveys that he's learned his lesson. He remarked:

"I understand now, better than ever, that you can't be in management and coach a team at the same time. If you're the coach, you coach. If you're GM, that's what you do."
