Lane Hutson silenced many critics last night with an underrated facet of his game

Lane Hutson is probably the best offensive prospect the Canadiens have had at defenseman since P.K. Subban.

He is simply electric. RDS made the excellent decision to make Hutson's games available on webcast for the NCAA post-season tournament, giving Quebecers a chance to watch the young man.

And he did not disappoint.

He never seems to run out of fuel. Yet he's always 100%. He skates, he outwits opponents, he feints and makes stealthy changes of direction, he excels at getting out of the zone, and he's a real poison in the offensive zone.

But yesterday, in the game against Cornell, another aspect of his game was easily remarkable. And that was the defensive aspect. In fact, he simply made it happen in the final minute with a blocked shot.

We agree, Hutson will never be a defensive ace. But it's totally untrue that he doesn't apply himself in his zone. He more than gets the job done in the NCAA. He even plays down low.

Can he still improve?

Of course he can.

But do you really believe that his coach would dare to use him for almost 30 minutes per game if he couldn't defend?

He is more complete than we think. Even if the offence is clearly his best asset.
