Oilers superstar Connor McDavid played a beer league hockey game near Toronto last night, adding more to possible free agency rumors, until they were squashed.

Connor McDavid hasn't signed a contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers yet, and that's all the gasoline Maple Leafs fans require.
Following Connor McDavid's appearance in a beer league contest in Newmarket, Ontario, last night, Toronto fans went wild with jokes and speculation that he's getting comfortable in Leafs country.
Some attempted to frame it as a sign he's getting comfortable with life at home. In fact, it was simply an informal summer skate with teammate Leon Draisaitl, per NHL analyst Jim Parsons.
NHL players frequently drop into local games to keep their hands fresh, particularly during the summer dog days. Nevertheless, since it's McDavid, even a recreational, meaningless runaround with beer leaguers is suddenly newsworthy.
The fact that he played in Ontario? Coincidence. The fact that he got stoned on a breakaway? Not quite a crisis.

Just because McDavid lost 6-2, doesn't mean he lost his skills

And okay, the team he played for lost 6-2, but that doesn't mean anything other than making a few rec league players happy.
Toronto fans got their kicks on the internet, teasing the Oilers faithful and fueling speculation about a future in blue and white. Some Edmonton fans, meanwhile, spun into offseason panic mode over McDavid's still-unsigned extension.
But here's the truth: McDavid is signed until 2025-26. He can sign an extension now, but there has been no indication of impatience from him or the club. If anything, the fact that Draisaitl was by his side should be reassuring. The pair is as close as ever.
"Oilers fans should remember: McDavid is under contract through the 2025-26 season. While he's eligible to sign an extension now, there's been no indication from him or the Oilers that the situation has become worrisome. And if anything, the fact that Draisaitl was literally by his side for this beer league skate is more reassuring than alarming. Oilers fans joked that the German superstar won't let McDavid out of his sight until both extensions are signed. They should take comfort in the idea that these two are practically inseparable."

- Jim Parsons

The true tale? One of the world's best players suited up for a Wednesday evening beer league contest and was humbled. That's it, and Jim Parsons believes there's nothing more to read into.
