The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded Joseph Woll and Simon Benoit to the Philadelphia Flyers for Samuel Ersson, Emil Andrae and a 2026 third-round pick.

This will be framed as a goalie trade. John Chayka's first move as Maple Leafs general manager is actually a defenseman acquisition dressed up as a crease cleanup.
Woll, 27, posted a .899 save percentage and 3.31 goals-against average last season - a clear step back from his .909 and 2.73 the year prior.
With Anthony Stolarz and Dennis Hildeby also on the roster, Toronto had a genuine logjam.
Moving Woll made sense. But the direction of the deal tells the real story.

Why Andrae is the actual return

Emil Andrae is 24 years old and a pending restricted free agent. The Swedish defenseman posted 13 points in 61 games for Philadelphia last season and is exactly the type of mobile, offensive-minded blueliner Toronto has needed.
Toronto gets Ersson as the backup piece, but Ersson's .870 save percentage last season makes him depth, not a solution.
This is not a lateral goalie swap. The Maple Leafs converted goalie surplus into a young defenseman with the exact profile their blue line needs.
Chayka understood that the window to exploit the Flyers' crease situation was narrow and moved quickly.

What this tells us about Chayka's plan

The Leafs still hold the first overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, widely expected to be used on Gavin McKenna.
This trade signals Chayka is not waiting to build - he is stacking the roster now, using existing assets to pull in young players at positions of need.
Ersson steps in as the backup behind Anthony Stolarz. Andrae steps into a defense corps that needed exactly this type of mobile, puck-moving profile.
The goalie trade is the cover story. The defenseman acquisition is the actual move.
