Frank Seravalli reports the Edmonton Oilers are landing Jason Dickinson, while Andrew Mangiapane and a 2027 first head out, and it screams deadline cap math.

The framework has Dickinson (50% retained) plus Colton Dach going to Edmonton, with Mangiapane and a top-12 protected 2027 first going to Chicago.
Dickinson is a UFA after 2025-26, and Chicago retaining half of his $4.25 million cap hit is the whole point.
At 50% retention, Edmonton is basically buying a playoff third-line center at a $2.125 million hit, plus a ton of PK utility.
Dach matters here too, he is 23, drafted in 2021 (Round 2) by the Chicago Blackhawks, and he brings straight-line heaviness.
Mangiapane's contract is the other lever, a $3.6 million cap hit through 2026-27, and he was even on waivers on Sunday.
That tells you how tight Edmonton's puzzle has been for weeks.
Chicago gets the swing, a former top-six bet who has 7-7-14 in 52 games this season, plus a premium pick with protection.

Jason Dickinson gives the Edmonton Oilers a real 3C

Oilers fans have been living in calculator mode all season, so a clean "win-now" fit like this feels like relief.
Dickinson's 6-7-13 in 47 games does not pop, but the role does, start in your end, win a draw, get it out, get off.
He also keeps the door open for the Oilers to chase one more add before Friday without lighting the cap on fire.
For the next game, I'm watching whether he slides right into the third line and lets the matchup minutes settle down fast.
For Chicago, the bet is simple, take the first, take the chance Mangiapane bounces, and keep stacking future outs.
If this is the final shape, it's a hard-nosed deadline move that tells you Edmonton wants boring shifts, not highlight reels.
