The Anaheim Ducks can pretend the Mason McTavish trade noise is just offseason speculation, but Darren Dreger's latest report makes that almost impossible.

According to Dreger, a major deadline deal was already “down the road” involving McTavish going to the St. Louis Blues, with Robert Thomas and Colton Parayko potentially part of the return. Pavel Mintyukov and maybe Roger McQueen were also reportedly involved in the framework.
That is not casual tire-kicking. That is a franchise-altering trade that got close enough to leak publicly.

Anaheim clearly already questioned the Mason McTavish fit

This is where the Ducks have to be honest with themselves. McTavish signed a six-year, $42 million extension last year, but long-term money does not automatically mean long-term certainty. If Anaheim was already willing to explore moving him months after committing to him, something about the organizational picture has changed.
And honestly, the reported return explains why.
Thomas would give Anaheim a more polished, high-end center. Parayko would immediately stabilize a blue line that still needs veteran weight. That kind of package is not selling low on McTavish; it is turning a young asset into a more complete roster.
The Blues side is just as fascinating. McTavish fits their need for a younger centerpiece, but giving up Thomas and Parayko would have been a massive philosophical shift.
That is why this leak matters. It reveals both teams were considering something far bigger than a tweak.
If the Ducks were close once, they should not bury the idea now. McTavish is valuable, but Anaheim is past the point where collecting young names is enough. If a blockbuster can make them better immediately, Pat Verbeek has to revisit it.
