The Islanders made a promise to one of their star forwards that he would not be traded, but that hasn't stopped the Canucks from calling the team about his services.

The Vancouver Canucks are contemplating a huge trade with far reaching effects league-wide across the NHL. The Canucks have talked with the New York Islanders about trading for forward Mat Barzal, The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta reports.

The Canucks are clearly interested and have called the Islanders on Barzal

Nothing is imminent, but Vancouver is on a list of a number of teams that have called about the 28-year-old superstar Barzal, despite New York promising Barzal he wouldn't be traded, adding more drama to the situation.

The Barzal-Canucks trade was also discussed with Jeff Marek on 'The Jeff Marek Show', bringing up Elias Pettersson again as a possible return piece. Speculation, but it only speaks to the magnitude of what would be an epic trade.
"I think that you could sell so high on him," Wyshynski said. "[You could] get at least two roster players and futures for him. I'm not saying they should, I'm not saying it makes sense, I'm just saying that if you really wanted to flip the script on this team and this franchise, I would look to do it right now."
Barzal was restricted to 30 games last year by injury but still had six goals and 20 points.
A skilled playmaker, he has hit 80 points twice as a player, and he is the type of player whose offense can explode with a more offense-minded system like Vancouver's.
While there had been grumblings in New York before, Barzal silenced them with an eight-year, $73.2 million deal in 2022. There remain six years on this contract with a $9.15 million cap hit and a 22-team no-trade clause.
It's speculation only at this point, but it's a narrative that Canucks fans will be monitoring with bated breath this summer.
