The Department Of Player Safety Hand Out Their Punishment To Red Wings' Jonatan Berggren For His Play Vs Leafs
There was a vicious play during last night's Red Wings-Maple Leafs game, and the Department of Player Safety has made its decision and issued a punishment.
The Detroit Red Wings beat the Toronto Maple Leafs, but it was a victory that had some controversy attached to it regarding one of their youngsters.
The Department of Player Safety in the NHL has fined Detroit Red Wings forward Jonatan Berggren $2,148.44 for cross-checking Toronto Maple Leafs forward Connor Dewar.
It occurred during the second period, as the Red Wings held a 1-0 lead. Once a play was whistled near Detroit's net, Connor Dewar started the physicality by making first contact with a light shoulder check to Jonatan Berggren.
Berggren responded with a swinging cross-check, hoping to get it across the shoulder of Dewar. However, his arm got too high, landing directly on Dewar's head and into the ice they both went.
Though no one was hurt, Berggren received a two-minute minor on the play. The Maple Leafs scored on the resulting power play, as Auston Matthews scored his 10th of the year to tie the score 1-1.
Despite the setback, the Red Wings pulled ahead for a 4-2 win to bring their record to 12-14-4. The Maple Leafs fell to 18-10-2 but remained atop the Atlantic Division with 38 points.
Berggren has scored four goals and two assists in 30 games this season while totaling six points. Dewar has played in 14 games and has just one assist.
The fine, totaling $2,148.44, is the maximum penalty allowed under the NHL's current collective bargaining agreement.
