Vincent Iorio gets claimed by the New York Rangers off waivers, and the San Jose Sharks lose a big, cheap right-shot defender overnight.
San Jose put Iorio on waivers on Friday, and New York immediately pounced.
It’s a straight waiver grab, no pick, no prospect, just priority and timing.
The Rangers clearly saw a roster opening, and a body they can trust in a pinch.
Iorio is 23, drafted in 2021, second round, by the Washington Capitals.
He arrives with a cap hit of $814,167 and RFA status coming in 2026, which matters for a team always juggling dollars.
With the Sharks this season, he’s at 0-3-3 in 21 games.
That line is light, but it’s not the point of his game.
San Jose had scratched him lately, which is usually the first waiver clue.
Vincent Iorio gives New York Rangers a needed safety net
Rangers fans have been begging for calmer, sturdier shifts on the third pair, and this feels like a very deliberate swing at that.
Iorio is 6-foot-3, right shot, and he defends first, which fits the "don’t get cute" minutes.
If he sticks, he can kill plays early and keep exits simple for a partner who wants to skate.
If he doesn’t, he’s waivers-eligible, so the Rangers need to manage the shuttle carefully.
The bet is that a new room and a clearer role unlock a steady bottom-pair contributor.
Either way, the next lineup card is going to tell us how much runway he gets right away.
