NHL’s 84-game switch could create a roster crunch for every team in 2026-27

Pierre LeBrun's report points to Sept. 29 and April 10, and that would hit every NHL front office before training camp even opens.

The tweet is here. The working plan lines up with the new CBA shift to an 84-game regular season and a preseason capped at 4 games.
That's the real story. This is not calendar trivia. This is roster construction pressure for all 32 clubs.
The current 2025-26 season began on Oct. 7 and runs through Thursday, April 16. So the league is trying to fit 2 more games into a tighter competitive window next year.
That changes the kind of team that can survive. A star-heavy lineup can win headlines, but extra mileage usually lands on the bottom six, the third pair, and the second goalie.
It also changes camp battles. With only 4 exhibition games, coaches get fewer live reps to sort out depth jobs, special teams looks, and injury insurance on the blue line.
And the deadline math gets sharper. Clubs will need more NHL-ready depth in September, not just a wish list for March. That is a major shift.

Why the smartest teams will act early

The strongest organizations will treat this like a schedule squeeze, not a branding change. They'll carry more playable forwards, protect their crease, and stop overloading 1 pair.
Travel-heavy teams in the West should feel this first. A late-September opener shortens the runway, and those extra dates raise the cost of every back-to-back.
Bubble teams lose excuses too. A cleaner format with more divisional balance means fewer soft pockets in the schedule and more direct damage inside the race.
So yes, the dates may still move. But the league has already shown every team where this is going: deeper benches, faster decisions, and less room to fake contender depth.
