It was an emotional night for Mark Scheifele and others as well, but none more so than for Mason Marchment, who also lost his father not too long ago. Game 6 at Dallas gave more than fiery hockey with consequences; it gave unrestrained emotion from both benches. The Stars won a physical contest that went to overtime to deny another Game 7 visit to Winnipeg. The night was more memorable to Jets winger Mark Scheifele than to anybody else. Earlier in the evening, his father died suddenly overnight.
In a twist of fate, Scheifele scored the game's opening goal
Saddened as he was, Scheifele played. In a sequence of events that had to be written by fate, he scored the opening goal of the game and provided the Jets with a 1-0 lead in the second period. But the Stars had an answer shortly afterwards. Scheifele took a tripping minor with 15 seconds to go in regulation that eradicated a breakaway chance. The penalty carried into overtime, where Thomas Harley won it for Dallas, and Scheifele simply sat in the penalty box with his head buried in his hands in shock. Opposing fans could feel the gravity of the situation. In the last game of the series, the handshake line never rang truer. Part of those who were offering him condolences was Dallas Stars forward Mason Marchment, a person far too familiar with Scheifele's suffering.

Loading from Twitter ...

When asked about what he said to Scheifele, Marchment stated, Just trying to help him through some emotions that I was going through. I just wanted to give him some words that I got told back when my dad passed that really helped me think a different way about it. To just kind of comfort him with what happened. Marchment's father died in 2022. Marchment inked with Dallas a week later. He relayed some condolences with some affection for the brutal nature of life to an emotionally bereaved opponent. At its very core, Game 6 was a playoff victory. It was more than that, though. It was a reminder that in hockey and in life, there are things greater than the game itself.
