Marie-Philip Poulin played the entire championship run on a torn ACL and meniscus.
The harder question comes after the surgery.
She confirmed the injury Thursday in an emotional videoconference, revealing she'll undergo surgery in July to repair her right knee.
Montreal Victoire general manager Danièle Sauvageau stated no recovery timeline can be established until after the operation itself.
The injury dates back to the 2026 Olympics. Poulin still attempted a return with the Victoire before her condition deteriorated further, competing through a torn ACL and a torn meniscus to help Montreal win the Walter Cup.
The toughness is real and undeniable. But toughness does not decide whether she returns as the same player.
The age factor changes this calculation entirely
Poulin turns 36 this fall, and ACL and meniscus reconstruction at that age carries a fundamentally different recovery profile than it does for a player in her mid-20s.
Tissue heals slower, return-to-sport timelines become less predictable, and there is no guarantee the form returns.
The standard ACL recovery window is nine to twelve months - and meniscus repair pushes it further.
Montreal cannot project a return date, and that math does not account for whether she returns at her prior level.
Montreal's championship window just became far less certain
The Victoire won the Walter Cup with Poulin on one leg, which speaks to the depth head coach Kori Cheverie has assembled.
But Poulin is the player who defines the competitive standard in that locker room. This is not only a roster problem - it is an identity problem for a franchise built entirely around her.
