Kevin Weekes says Edmonton and Calgary are closing on World Cup of Hockey hosting, and Alberta just got a massive best on best spotlight.
Update:
Weekes put the smoke in the air first, and the hard reporting already underneath it matters more than the tease. Gary Bettman has confirmed Calgary and Edmonton submitted a joint bid, and said an announcement could come as early as today.
That is the data punch. This event is set for February 2028, built as an eight nation tournament, spread across one North American city and one European city, over 12 days and 17 games.
There is no cap hit, no clause, and no retention angle here. The roster construction angle is civic, not club based, because Alberta is selling two NHL buildings, two fan bases, and one TV friendly rivalry package.
That is why this fit makes hockey sense. Rogers Place is already a major event rink, and Scotia Place is scheduled to open in fall 2027, right on the tournament runway.
For the NHL and NHLPA, Alberta offers easy branding. McDavid country, the Battle of Alberta, and a built in road trip for fans is cleaner than trying to invent juice from scratch.
Kevin Weekes may be hinting at Alberta's winning pitch
Flames and Oilers fans would hate admitting it, but this is the kind of shared stage both cities can absolutely sell.
The smart play is splitting the early tournament inventory, then dropping the biggest knockout games into the venue that tests strongest with broadcasters and sponsors. That is pure event building, not sentiment.
It also helps that the league has been open about wanting firm World Cup announcements around the Olympic window. Bettman and Bill Daly both signaled that timeline months before this Weekes post.
My read, this is less about whether Alberta is in and more about what each city gets. Group games feel easy to picture, but the final round is where the political heat starts.
That matters for the next phase because every host choice becomes a message. Give Alberta the crown jewel games, and the league is saying this market can carry a global hockey event on its own noise.
