The NHL commissioner confirmed succession talks are underway, but his real timeline may depend on unfinished business.
Gary Bettman addressed reporters ahead of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final between the Carolina Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knights and acknowledged what many have suspected for months.
At 74, the longest-serving commissioner in North American professional sports admitted the league has been working on a succession plan for at least the past couple of years.

The framing around this story has centered on who replaces Bettman and when. But the more revealing detail is what he's been quietly finishing before that handoff becomes real.
The checklist Bettman is completing on his way out
Over the past 14 months, Bettman has locked in two of the three major deals that will define the NHL's financial future for the next decade.
The CBA extension, ratified in July 2025, secures labor peace through the 2029-30 season.
The $11 billion Canadian television deal with Rogers, announced in April 2025, begins next season and runs through 2037-38.
That leaves one piece still on the table. The American television rights, currently split between ESPN and TNT Sports at a combined $625 million annually, expire after the 2027-28 season.
Reports from Sports Media Watch indicate the NHL has already approached both networks about early renewals.
That negotiation is the largest single revenue opportunity in league history, and it's reasonable to assume Bettman intends to close it himself.
Why the timeline matters more than the name
Deputy commissioner Bill Daly is widely regarded as the most likely successor, and Bettman has gradually shifted responsibilities to him over the years.
But Bettman's comments in Raleigh suggest this transition won't begin in earnest until the American media deal is signed.
The succession question isn't really about who comes next. It's about what Bettman refuses to leave unfinished.
