Former Vancouver Canucks forward Daniel Sprong has decided to leave the NHL for the time being and sign a contract overseas with CSKA Moscow in Russia.

Dutch-Canadian winger Daniel Sprong has signed a one-year Russian KHL club contract with Moscow's team CSKA, the team announced on Wednesday.
That will be the 28-year-old's first European pro exposure, as he has played his whole pro life in North America.
He was born in the Netherlands, but Daniel Sprong was eight years old when he joined Canada and ascended the junior hockey ranks playing for the QMJHL's Charlottetown Islanders.
Sprong was drafted 46th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2015 NHL Draft and was on the Penguins' opening-night roster at 18 years old.
In the subsequent ten years, he played in 374 NHL games and had 166 points (76 goals and 90 assists), as well as 68 penalty minutes.

Sprong only played in nine games for the Canucks

A one-time Vancouver Canucks winger, Sprong's 2023-24 season was especially rocky. Sprong started the year in Vancouver before he was dealt back to Seattle for his second stint there, where he played in 19 American Hockey League games.
Then he was dealt at the trade deadline by Seattle to the New Jersey Devils. Sprong appeared in postseason games with Washington, Seattle, and New Jersey as well, racking up three points in 14 games.
CSKA Moscow, the former Red Army club side, is eyeing a redemption year after the team finished fifth in the West Conference in the KHL and was knocked out in the first round of the play-offs.
The team has added some players in the names of Rhett Gardiner, Spencer Martin, and Nikolai Kovalenko, aside from Sprong.
