USPHL Player Faces Lifetime Ban After Assaulting Referee
A USPHL game in February turned from a normal night to chaos in the blink of an eye. The South Shore Kings and the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Knights were engaged in a tie game late into the first period.
The Initial Play
The play was a normal breakout that happens in a game hundreds of times. The puck carrier evaded a forechecker but then made contact with the referee. After making contact with the official the South Shore Kings player Paul Halloran shoved the referee. This led to the referee stopping play and ejecting Halloran from the game. Fans in the crowd during the video seem to be confused as the initial shove does not seem malicious. Halloran also seems to be quite upset as he starts to make his way off the ice.
The Punch That Could End A Career
Halloran is seen skating toward the door to the locker room when he suddenly turns toward the referee who called the penalty. Once in front of the referee, Halloran punches him right in the face. The other referees then restrain the player and escort him off the ice. The referee gets back up and seems to be okay considering the circumstances.
Facing The Consequences
A report shows that Halloran has since been permanently banned from USPHL play. A promising young player is now out of the league after assaulting the referee.
