Report: Oilers Looking To Acquire Blue Jackets Goalie In Major Trade

The team that has been most consistently involved in trade rumors with the Oilers has been the Montreal Canadiens. While a trade with the Canadiens may very well happen, it now appears as though the Oilers are exploring more options as they have had high-ranking scouts at each of the last two Blue Jackets games.

The Blue Jackets are currently running a tandem of Elvis Merzlikins and Spencer Martin. However, goaltender Danill Tarasov is expected to return from injury soon, complicating Columbus's goaltending situation.

Also relevant to Edmonton's goalie search is the fact that the Canadiens just announced a three-year extension for goaltender Sam Montembeault today. Montembeault has been the name most consistently linked to the Oilers. Notably, his new extension does not include any kind of trade protection.

At this point, it is hard to say what the Oilers are going to do next. They have been consistently involved in trade rumors, but nothing has materialized. The Oilers finally seem to be turning things around as they've won four straight contests. Perhaps the latest hot streak will give the team confidence that they can still win this year, making a goalie trade more likely.
