Leafs GM Kyle Dubas gets publicly called out by an analyst

Again this year, the Toronto Maple Leafs are the team with the most pressure to win. While their playoff berth is already pretty much confirmed, it's more in the post-season that the success of this team will be measured.

If the Leafs still don't win a playoff round, there is no doubt that a huge storm is in store in Toronto.

In fact, team GM Kyle Dubas sent shock waves when he revealed that he has no intention of trading for a big piece at this year's deadline.

After hearing this from Dubas, popular analyst and former NHL GM Craig Button bluntly picked up Dubas by openly criticizing this decision. Here's what he had to say:

"I'll go back to last year's postseason press conference: [Dubas said] ''we believe in our players, we believe we're close, we believe we're in a position now to compete, we believe we've learned a lot.

"They've shown that they deserve that belief, they've shown that. Now step up and help them. I think it's on Kyle Dubas [to do better]. I don't think it's on the players to show me anything. The players have done everything you could have asked them to do in my opinion. It's now on Kyle Dubas." - Craig Button

It's a tricky situation, it must be said, because Dubas doesn't have a contract for next season. He may not have as much leeway to make a big move by trading away big chunks of the team's future, especially after the major failure of Nick Foligno's 2021 addition.

However, it is certain that for a team with confidence, the GM usually tries to make improvements to his roster, adding key pieces to fill needs.

If we take the example of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Julien BriseBois has never been afraid to pay the big price to acquire important pieces, as we saw with the additions of Blake Coleman, Barclay Goodrow, David Savard and Brendan Hagel, last year.

We'll see in the coming weeks if Dubas will keep his word to stay put or not.
