The Colorado Avalanche have been red-hot to start the 2023-24 season, but it hasn't come without faults, as their weekend matchup against the Buffalo Sabres showed.

Terrible calls

Unfortunately, that game has been overshadowed by some calls made by the officials, as they didn't give what many believed was a clear penalty to Colorado after Cale Makar was pushed into the end boards.
Following that, Nathan MacKinnon looked to stand up for his teammate, but was hit with a 10-minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, and unsurprisingly, Head Coach Jared Bednar was less than thrilled about it.

Calling out the officials

Following the game, the Stanley Cup winning Head Coach took to the media to call out the officiating, and it's hard to argue with him.
«There's frustration out of our team because that [penalty] wasn't called,» Bednar said. «[Makar is] obviously a key player for us.»

«You get a little frustrated and you have a few things to say. I'd just like the officials to have thicker skin in that spot. You know they may have missed one or decided not to call it – whatever it is. I think you've got to take a little bit of harsh feedback in that situation without doling out a ten-[minute misconduct].

«If it carries on and carries on, then that's a different story. That's my issue.»

Ultimately, this may not impact the way the NHL handles their officiating, but there's been some terrible calls this season, so the hope is that maybe this interview could ruffle enough feathers in the league office to make a difference.
