Ottawa Senators former player Bobby Ryan has taken issue with a recent tweet by Ottawa Sun reporter Bruce Garrioch, who commented on the team's upcoming participation in the NHL's Global Series. Garrioch referenced the last time the Senators went overseas for the event, which he believes had a negative impact on the team's entire season. He stated that the team's poor performance was partly due to coach Guy Boucher's belief that rest was the best solution, leading to a lack of practice, and resulting in a season that went off the rails. However, Ryan responded to Garrioch, refuting his claims and suggesting that there were other factors that contributed to the team's struggles.

In 2017, the Senators participated in the NHL's Global Series, a year after making the conference finals. However, they had a disappointing season, missing the playoffs and ultimately starting a rebuilding process. Boucher was fired the following year. While the rest is a weapon philosophy employed by Boucher may have contributed to the team's difficulties, there were other major issues during the season, such as a growing locker-room split between Erik Karlsson, Mike Hoffman, and their spouses. In fact, Melinda Karlsson even received a protective order against Hoffman's long-time partner. Ryan expressed his frustration with Garrioch's comments, stating that there were at least five other factors that were more important in contributing to the team's disappointing season. Garrioch responded by telling Ryan not to be like his co-hosts on a podcast. Nevertheless, Ryan continued to push back on Garrioch's claims.
