It doesn't take much of a genius to realize that the Canadiens have little chance of making the playoffs this year. The team will continue to improve, but there's still a long way to go to get there.

According to Eric Engels, an unexpected player could be on the market before the trade deadline.
Of course, with Sean Monahan's one-year contract, he could make a good bargaining chip, but we're talking more about David Savard.
"Knowing that the CH will probably not qualify for the playoffs, players like Sean Monahan and David Savard will be possible trade candidates at the trade deadline.

Savard could bring a good prospect back to the Habs thanks to his solid performance, Stanley Cup experience and reasonable contract."

Although he's an exemplary veteran and a true warrior, Savard's place will no longer be the same in Montreal when Logan Mailloux and David Reinbacher are in the lineup. He may well be sacrificed at the deadline to fill another need.
