Tonight, the Toronto Maple Leafs disastrous season has gotten even worse as captain Auston Matthews has suffered a serious looking knee injury against the Anaheim Ducks.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are nearing the end of a disappointing and frustrating season that will see them miss the playoff for the first time since 2015-16 the season they would go on to draft Auston Matthews.
Tonight, the Maple Leafs season has gone from bad to downright terrible after Matthews suffered a tough looking knee injury.
The injury occurred on a knee-on-knee hit from Anaheim Ducks defenseman Radko Gudas.
Matthews immediately hit the ice and was doubled over in pain having to be helped off the ice by the trainer while Gudas was ejected for the dirty play.
The Maple Leafs confirmed shortly after Matthews' departure that he would not return to tonight's game.
With Gudas ejected, he has now opened himself up for a potential suspension from the NHL's Department of Player Safety.
Radko Gudas faces likely suspension while Auston Matthews health is in doubt
The hit now throws both teams into unknown territory once the final buzzer sounds in Toronto.
For the Ducks, Gudas will almost certainly face a hearing and more likely than not be suspended for multiple games.
Heading into the chase for the playoffs losing Gudas will be potentially detrimental for that young Ducks team.
As for the Maple Leafs, replacing Matthews will be impossible internally but if there was a season to lose him for a long stretch this year when they are out of the playoff race might be best case scenario.
As more information is provided on Gudas' suspension fate and Matthews' health we will continue to provide the latest news and updates.
