The Whiteout is famous around Winnipeg, but during Game 7, it was taken to whole new heights, literally speaking, at 30,000 feet in the air in an airplane. The Winnipeg Jets brought fans in attendance at Canada Life Centre cheering on this weekend, but for some Winnipeggers, the excitement of Sunday evening's win was felt thousands of feet in the sky. An airliner making its way to Winnipeg was cruising above Saskatchewan as the Jets completed their Game 7 victory against the St. Louis Blues to qualify for the second round of Stanley Cup playoff games.

Loading from Twitter ...

Rishona Hyman, who was returning with a U16 water polo team from Calgary, said they had just boarded the plane when the Jets tied the game with only two seconds left in regulation. People were going crazy in the Calgary airport before we even got on the gate, she said Monday. Then we board the plane, and I think it was the first time people were like 'Can we stay? We want to finish the game.' - Rishona Hyman Immediately, other travelers flocked to get online using the onboard Wi-Fi to view the rest of the action.
People on the plane began waving barf bags to imitate the Whiteout
A man at the front of a plane waved his iPad for people to view. The cabin became a literal whiteout, Hyman described, with fans waving barf bags and shouting Go Jets Go together. The pilot actually came on and said, 'Okay I'm not going to actually talk because you don't want to hear me talk. We're all going to cheer for the Jets. Have a great flight,' she said. The flight attendants flashed the lights on and off. Everyone's going crazy, Hyman said. Then the water polo team that I was traveling with started singing the, you know, 'be my girl' song they sing at the Jets arena. It couldn't have been better.

Loading from Twitter ...

While cruising over the prairies in mid-air, Jets captain Adam Lowry sealed the win in double overtime, which led to massive cheers on the flight. It was truly Canadian, truly Winnipeg, Hyman said. Everyone was into it. Everyone was cheering and screaming and, like, so excited. The excitement was palpable. As the Jets are preparing to take on the Dallas Stars on Wednesday, though, Hyman said there was no better spot to be when the victory was occurring than 30,000 feet above the ground.
