Tonight, NHL analyst Adam Proteau of The Hockey News has put Kyle Connor's future with the Winnipeg Jets in doubt beyond this upcoming season. Kyle Connor is heading into the final season of his current contract with the Winnipeg Jets but is eligible for a massive extension.

Loading from Twitter ...

After losing Nikolaj Ehlers in free agency the Winnipeg Jets and their fans are at risk of encountering the same fate will fellow star winger Kyle Connor. To this point in the offseason there have been no reports of extension talks between Connor and the Jets which has now led NHL analyst Adam Proteau to be concerned about the American winger's future in Winnipeg.
NHL Analyst Casts A Shadow Of Doubt Over Kyle Connor's Future
Proteau makes the point that Connor is in his prime and playing at a superstar level which could eliminate any chance of him taking a «hometown discount» with the Jets. Connor is in his prime, and he has a degree of leverage right now that he may never have again. Why would he accept a hometown discount of sorts when he and his agent are fully aware he could be earning at least $1-$2-million more per year? The answer is clear: he's not going to accept a hometown discount. Proteau then reveals that this put the Jets in a terrible position between either having to overpay Connor at a number he might not be able to live up to or potential disrespect him by lowballing him. Indeed, spread out over an eight-year deal, Connor would be leaving $16 million or more on the table to stay in Winnipeg by taking an $8.5-million AAV deal. We can understand why Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff would try his best to keep Connor's pay raise to a minimum, but he'd be running the risk of alienating a cornerstone player. The Jets and GM Kevin Cheveldayoff still have plenty of time to resolve this issue but the organization needs to truly evaluate whether or not Connor is an irreplaceable part of the future core group. As more updates are provided on negotiations between Kyle Connor and the Winnipeg Jets we will pass along all of the latest news.
