Rutger McGroarty left Winnipeg in an infuriating way for many Jets fans, but now the former Jets prospect has suffered a major injury ahead of training camp.

Back in 2022, the Winnipeg Jets landed who they thought would become a key piece of their organization when they used a first-round pick on talented winger Rutger McGroarty out of the University of Michigan.
However, things turned sour last off-season when he made it clear he would never play for the Jets, as he was eventually traded to Pittsburgh in a deal that landed Winnipeg a former first-round pick in Brayden Yager.
Now, McGroarty's career has taken a turn for the worse as he has reportedly suffered an injury.

McGroarty suffers long-term injury ahead of training camp

While there's plenty of hatred from Jets fans, no one wants to see that turn into an injury, but on the verge of training camp, Penguins GM Kyle Dubas announced that indeed McGroarty had suffered an injury.
"It's going to be a little more of an indefinite timeline because of his age and the potential he has, just have to be very patient with Rutger on that one."
Most of the reasoning behind the timeline for Dubas is the long-term outlook for McGroarty, as the team are likely to take their time with his potential recovery to make sure that the 21-year old gets back to 100% before making his return to the league.
Beyond an upper-body injury, it's unclear exactly what happened with the former first-round pick, but now, the hope is that he can get back on the ice and continue building on the momentum that he began in the 8 NHL games he got to end the 2024/25 season in Pittsburgh.
