The Vancouver Canucks finally named Adam Foote their new head coach and today he spoke to the media and revealed a piece of advice his former boss Rick Tocchet gave him.

Earlier this week, the Vancouver Canucks officially made the move to hire Adam Foote as the organization's next head coach.
With Foote now in the fold, fans and media waited patiently for him to speak to the media about his plans for the future of the Canucks.
This afternoon that finally took place as Foote had his introductory press conference and gave key insight on his plans and even advice from Rick Tocchet.
Foote of course comes in on the heels of Tocchet's contract expiring and the two had a great relationship with Foote admitting Tocchet prepared him to be a head coach.
When I told him a year ago, I think I want to do this, (be a head coach) he said he really wanted it for me.

With Tocchet preparing for an exit of his own it seems he still tried to leave the Canucks with an exit plan to replace him.
Foote reveals that Tocchet instilled a key principle of empowering your assistants as a head coach that Foote will look to implement himself.
Really empower your staff, Tocchet said he'd urged Foote. When you're an assistant, you're focused on your own stuff. But when you're in charge, when you've got staff, give them the space. There might be things they know better than you, you have to feel comfortable in that.

Beyond general advice for Foote, Tocchet also gave some specific words of wisdom on how to handle controversial star Elias Pettersson as well.

Later in his press conference, Foote was asked about moving forward with Elias Pettersson as the team's superstar forward.
This is when Foote revealed that Tocchet gave him a plan to help keep Pettersson on track by giving him a detailed daily schedule.
Have an itinerary for the day When Petey walks in the door and we have our hands on him, give him a plan: this guy's gonna work with you for 15-20 minutes on the power-play side-wall. Then this is going to happen. And so on.

While some players work well on their own others need structure and guidance from staff to stay on track and it seems Pettersson falls into that second category.
As for what Foote believes Pettersson needs the most this offseason the Canucks new head coach admits confidence is key.
At the end of the day getting Pettersson back on track is priority number one for Adam Foote.
If the tricks of the trade shared by Tocchet can be used to improve Pettersson's game then he must follow through on the advice given.
As the offseason begins, it will be fascinating to hear more from Foote regarding his plans for Pettersson and the rest of the Canucks group as they look to claw their way back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
