This afternoon, a new report from Thomas Drance of The Athletic has confirmed that the Vancouver Canucks have decided Thatcher Demko will be the team's starting goalie. Heading into the offseason one of the biggest questions surrounding the Vancouver Canucks remained who will be the team's goaltending tandem for 2025-26. Over the last year, the Canucks re-signed both Kevin Lankinen and Thatcher Demko to long-term contracts cementing their future with the organization. Additionally, the Canucks Canucks re-signed both Arturs Silovs further cementing Lankinen and Demko as the tandem of the present and future. Still, even after these moves, questions remained over who would be the main starting goalie heading into the season. Tonight, a report from Thomas Drance has confirmed that Thatcher Demko is expected to be the starter in a nearly even split with Kevin Lankinen.
New Report Confirms Who The Canucks Starting Goalie Will Be This Season
According to Drance, the Canucks plan to split the net fairly evenly between Demko and Lankinen with Demko playing around 50 games. Based on what I'm hearing about the club's plans for a split in net, we should expect Demko to play in the neighbourhood of 50 games this upcoming season with Lankinen appearing in the other 32 or so. Of course, Demko has struggled with health issues over the last couple of seasons and Drance points out that if things go off the rails the Canucks do not have much of a safety net in the minor leagues. Of course, the best laid plans can change rapidly. Behind the Demko and Lankinen tandem, the club will have Nikita Tolopilo and Ty Young - neither of whom has played an NHL game - as its AHL battery, but may lean on veteran puck stopper Jiri Patera. If the Canucks can get a full healthy season out of Demko and Lankinen the Canucks could have one of the best goaltending tandems in the NHL. As training camp gets underway it will be fun to see if Demko does take the lead or if Adam Foote has other plans for opening night.
