Tonight, a new report from NHL insider Frank Seravalli has revealed internal conflict led to a disagreement over who should be hired as the Vancouver Canucks General Manager.
The Vancouver Canucks endured a terrible season ending at the bottom of the NHL in points leading to the firing of GM Patrik Allvin and President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford.
In their place, the Canucks hired the Sedin twins as co-presidents and then promoted for Assistant GM Ryan Johnson to be their new General Manager.
Now, a new report has suggested that there is frustration within the organization from some individuals who wanted to hire Evan Gold instead.
Insider reveals internal conflict in Vancouver over Canucks GM hiring
According to insider Frank Seravalli, many within the Canucks organization were hoping Evan Gold would be taking over and hired as the new GM.
However, reported disputes over money led the Canucks to go in a different direction and hire Johnson instead.
In the end [Evan Gold] wasn't the winning candidate; seen lots of speculation about dollars; there's been a tug of war...a whole camp of Canucks people that have been trying to champion...Ryan Johnson that ultimately just won
It was also speculated that Gold demanded the Canucks make major upgrades to their research and development department that the Aqulini's were unwilling to provide.
Now, the Canucks have reportedly settled for their second choice candidate in Johnson who will partner with the Sedin's to try and turn around the Canucks future.
As the offseason gets underway, it will be interesting to see if Johnson can prove his doubters wrong and get the team going in the right direction for the 2026-27 season.
