Today, in a new interview with NHL.com, Vancouver Canucks star Elias Pettersson revealed what went wrong this season and how he plans to move forward. The Vancouver Canucks had a tumultuous season surrounded in chaos and controversy headlined by the conflict between Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller. This conflict led J.T. Miller to be shipped off to the New York Rangers in a blockbuster trade. Despite the two being separated the Canucks season stayed off the rails leading to a disappointing end as the Canucks missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Now, with the offseason in full swing, Pettersson has addressed the media and spoken about this past season and what went wrong and how he expects to move forward.
Elias Pettersson Addresses Disappointing Season And Gives Hope For The Future
During a recent interview with NHL.com, Pettersson began by admitting he put a lot of pressure on himself to live up to the contract he signed the previous offseason. Maybe I had the wrong mindset in the early parts of the season, you know now I've signed a big contract so I need to do more than before instead of just being myself. And when the points didn't come, I started to overthink every situation instead of doing what I usually do. Pettersson also confirmed he was playing through a severe knee injury which hindered his abilities throughout the year. My play last season was obviously not on the same level as the previous two seasons... I had an injury in my knee last summer and it really limited my training then; it was difficult to go 100%. Now I'm just trying to look forward. Pettersson then praised his teammates and the organization for how hard they fought to get back in the race despite falling just short of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. With last seasons disappointments now behind him Pettersson has fully committed to being the best version of himself for next season to catapult the Canucks back into Stanley Cup Playoff contention. We fought to get back, but it took longer than we expected. But when the season was over I switched mindset into preparing for next season and spending the extra time in the gym. It sucks that we're not still playing but I'll use the extra month to get ready for the next season.

Loading from Twitter ...

Only time will tell if Pettersson can get back to the superstar level so many in Vancouver expect but he clearly has a new level of focus and drive that could lead to a major breakout season.
