Sunny Mehta turns down Maple Leafs GM role, signs with conference rival

Tonight, the Toronto Maple Leafs have lost one of their top General Manager candidates Sunny Mehta after he was hired by the New Jersey Devils.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are deep into their search for a new General Manager to replace Brad Treliving.
Since the beginning of the process one of the primary names mentioned as a top contender for the job has been Sunny Mehta.
Mehta, an assistant GM with the Florida Panthers, has been a popular name during this GM hiring cycle and interviewed with several teams.
This evening, Mehta has made his choice turning down the Maple Leafs and instead joining the New Jersey Devils as their General Manager.
New Jersey Devils hire Sunny Mehta as General Manager
According to multiple reports and an announcement by the team, the New Jersey Devils have hired Mehta to become their General Manager.

Mehta will be returning to his roots with the Devils as he grew up in New Jersey.
Mehta will now have a major decision to make regarding former Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe who as of now remains the Devils head coach.
This is a massive loss in the eyes of many Maple Leafs fans who were hoping Mehta would be the man to turn things around in Toronto.
Instead, the Maple Leafs will have to turn their focus elsewhere with Mike Gillis and John Chayka now becoming the frontrunner candidates to take over in Toronto.
