NHL analyst Nick Kypreos has recently shared some news that Leafs GM Brad Treliving is closing in on signing a team's key player to an extension. Playing for the Maple Leafs had always been a dream for Steven Lorentz, and at 28, he seized the opportunity of a professional tryout (PTO) to fight for a spot in the blue and white. Though the PTO came with no promises, Steven Lorentz quickly ingratiated himself with teammates, coaches, and fans with his non-stop motor and affable personality that earned him a one-year contract.

Now, just four months in, Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos says the Leafs have been impressed and are already discussing a possible extension with him. On a fourth line that has seen a lot of change this season, Lorentz has been the one constant, playing in all games, a pretty good testimony to the trust put in him by head coach Craig Berube. The 6'4, 208-pound forward, who can also play center, combines speed, physicality, and a strong presence on the penalty kill. The work hasn't gone unnoticed by Lorentz. On Tuesday, he notched a game-winning goal against the New York Islanders to bring his season tally to four goals and seven points. It has quadrupled his goal total from last season over the same 38-game span. Post-Islanders game, Nick Kypreos said Lorentz will be eligible to sign an extension on Jan. 1 and, reportedly, the Leafs are looking to lock him up. Tomorrow is the first day they can extend Steven Lorentz's contract [January 1]. I have to think they will look to try to get him a new deal. - Nick Kypreos

Inking a bottom-sixer isn't perhaps the flashiest move, but Lorentz means stability for a team that's going to see so much change in the depth lines. Still with the bevy of roster questions brought up by extensions, trades, and injuries facing the Leafs in 2025, Lorentz simply loves playing in Toronto. And that continuity is something very good that the Leafs may desperately need and would do even better embracing.
