NHL's decision sparks controversy after Cédric Paré's hit on Patrik Laine
The situation regarding Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Cédric Paré and the hit on Montreal Canadiens star Patrik Laine seems to be resolved. We're still waiting on official word, but it appears the NHL won't be taking any action against Paré for that knee-on-knee hit.
Honestly, it's tough to swallow. For an AHL player to make a dangerous play, and then face zero consequences? That doesn't sit right.
There's no fine or suspension. It feels like a contradiction from a department of player safety that claims it wants to protect its players, especially the top ones.
If the NHL department of player safety is serious about their reputation, they can't sit on their hands and wish this goes away because fans won't forget it.
The decision is frustrating, just because of the injury and it sends a message that these reckless incidents are okay. To make things more confusing, Arber Xhekaj from the Canadiens got fined for going after Paré in retaliation.
But what about the guy who started all this? Is it because he's not in the league to start the season, he won't get reprimanded? Why not then talk with those in the AHL? Pare will almost certainly be a Toronto Marlies member and even he would understand facing consequences for his fatal actions.
