Alex Steeves, a Toronto Maple Leafs prospect, made an emphatic return to the Toronto Marlies with an outstanding first game back, recording a hat-trick and promptly reminding everyone what the NHL club might be missing after his recent reassignment to the AHL team. Indeed, many expected the 24-year-old forward, which the leafs cut in the final week of training camp, would push for a full-time NHL role this season. Most people thought when he signed a two-way contract worth $775,000 annually, Steeves had the potential to crack the crowded Maple Leafs roster. Having played only seven games across the past three seasons, Steeves has consistently shown his worth within the AHL. With Steeves having contract flexibility and the ability to perform under pressure, he will likely find his name at the top of the list when injuries occur within the Leafs. His past success in the AHL, along with trust developed with the organization, makes him a very good candidate when a call-up is needed.

Another strong season with the Marlies could put Alex Steeves in a great position to join the NHL roster once again. That development and such a performance might just open more doors at the top level soon enough.
