Stan Bowman recently commented on the progress being made in Connor McDavid's contract negotiations, but his words did anything but reassure Oilers nation. Connor McDavid is eligible to sign an extension on Tuesday, when he has just one year remaining on his current deal. Although fans of the Oilers are still holding out hope that the organization can ink their captain to an extension, general manager Stan Bowman said that talks have not yet begun. Well, I can't characterize it because I don't know yet. I don't mean that in a bad way. We really haven't talked to him at all about his contract. It's really just been talking about our team and how we can improve and hit what he sees (as important) and that kind of stuff. So the conversations haven't even started as far as a contract. - Stan Bowman

Loading from Twitter ...

These words have sparked a bit of panic among Oilers fans, as it does not appear that any progress whatsoever has occurred. Meanwhile, Edmonton's goaltending is still under scrutiny after the second straight Stanley Cup Final loss for the team.
The Oilers lost out on John Gibson after he was traded to Detroit
Trade rumors hit a fever pitch for Anaheim's John Gibson, but that veteran netminder isn't an option anymore, as the Ducks shipped him to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for two draft picks and goalie Petr Mrazek. Gibson's $6.4 million cap hit over the next two years would have been a considerable jump, however, from the combined $3.6 million Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard will earn. Edmonton had been aggressively coveting an upgrade in net, though, after getting embarrassed by Florida in the Finals. Bowman stated at the NHL Draft that goaltending remains a consideration, but cautioned that the team must watch out not to use up its cap space. With Gibson now gone and Joel Hofer staying behind in St. Louis, having signed a new contract, Edmonton's options are running thin. If the Oilers make a big splash, they could pursue a top goalie like Islanders' Ilya Sorokin or wait to make a trade for other goalies who perhaps haven't signed a new contract yet with their respective clubs.
