Craig Berube is now in play, and fired Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch is the reason this search carries real weight.
Edmonton did not create a vacancy to browse names. Stan Bowman moved on from Knoblauch on May 14 after a first-round exit, with no replacement named that day.
The Oilers are not rebuilding their bench for patience. They are trying to squeeze one more level out of a roster still built around immediate pressure.
Bowman's reported phone conversation with Berube puts structure around the search. This is no longer just a recycled name tied to a famous market.
Berube also became available on May 13, when the Maple Leafs fired him after two seasons behind their bench.
Johnston delivers the key detail without dressing it up: Bowman and Berube have already talked.
Re Oilers coaching search: "There's already been at least one phone conversation between Stan Bowman and Craig Berube."

Stan Bowman is chasing a harder bench
Berube fits the obvious Edmonton need. He is demanding, blunt, and comfortable coaching stars without turning the room into a comfort zone.
The Oilers did not fire Knoblauch because he forgot how to coach. They fired him because Bowman wants a different voice.
Sportsnet reported Bowman used that exact idea after the dismissal, saying Edmonton needed a different voice behind the bench.
Berube would not be a soft reset. He would change the temperature around ice time, defensive habits, neutral-zone decisions, and accountability after bad shifts.
There is risk in that swing. A strong bench personality can push a contender forward, but it can also expose roster flaws management would rather hide.
That is why this call matters. As of now, Edmonton's coaching search has already reached the serious-contact stage, and Berube is no longer just a name on the outside.
