Rumors emerge linking Leon Draisaitl to German-owned San Jose Sharks
NHL insider Greg Wyshynski hypothesized today that Leon Draisaitl could sign with the San Jose Sharks in free agency after his contract with the Oilers expires.
The idea may sound ridiculous at first, but it very well could be a real possibility. Draisaitl has just one year remaining on his deal with the Oilers. As such, he will hit free agency ahead of the 2025-26 season, assuming he doesn't sign an extension with the team before July 1st next summer. By that time, the Sharks figure to be much better than they are currently, with 4th overall pick from the 2023 draft Will Smith and 1st overall pick in the 2024 draft Macklin Celebrini both set to join the team next year.
Furthermore, the Sharks owner, Hasso Platner, is German. Thus, there is somewhat of a connection already established with the German superstar in Draisaitl. If they are somehow able to get a deal done, the Sharks top six could include Macklin Celebrini, Leon Draisaitl, Will Smith, William Eklund, Quinton Musty, and Fabian Zetterlund. Suddenly the Sharks are looking very dangerous up front in this scenario.
Jeff mentioned that there is an «opportunity» and that it has been SPECULATED on by the hockey industry for at least a year maybe longer.

The team still has question marks on defense and in goal, but attracting a superstar like Draisaitl and the addition of their own home-grown talent, could make San Jose a top destination for free agents, making it easier for them to fill in the gaps on the roster. For the Sharks this would be a dream scenario while it would be a nightmare for the Oilers.
