Kris Knoblauch demands hard, right-way hockey as the Edmonton Oilers face the Washington Capitals at Rogers Place with two points hanging.

Edmonton comes in at 25-19-8, and the head coach is basically asking for a reset on habits.

That "play hard" part is obvious. The "play the right way" part is the test, especially after a 6-2 loss to Pittsburgh.

Tonight is about puck management first, not trading chances because you feel like you "owe" the crowd a track meet.

Connor McDavid drives everything when the Oilers keep their structure, and his 30-55-85 line says the offence is there if the details show up.

For me, "right way" means cleaner exits, support under pressure, and no fly-by defending when the puck turns.

It also means discipline, because letting Washington live on the man advantage is begging for trouble.

Edmonton can still get its looks, especially if Zach Hyman keeps parking at the net the way he does, and he's sitting at 19-12-31.

If the Oilers win the middle of the ice, the crowd will take care of the rest.

Drop this one, and suddenly Monday against Anaheim feels heavier than it should.
