The Edmonton Oilers seem to have found a goaltender of the future as Connor Ungar in the AHL has been lights out in recent weeks.
The Edmonton Oilers goaltending problems have plagued the team for the last several years.
The Oilers tried to fix this issue by trading for Penguins veteran Tristan Jarry in a blockbuster deal sending Stuart Skinner the other way.
However, Jarry seems to have similar issues staying healthy and consistent that Skinner had during his Oilers tenure leaving fans disappointed once again.
Now, hope has finally been provided for the future by Oilers prospect Connor Ungar in the AHL.
Oilers goaltender prospect impressing after dominant AHL performances
Despite being undrafted, Ungar has worked his way up through the minor leagues and now become the starter for the Bakersfield Condors after the Oilers promoted Connor Ingram.
In his five games since becoming the starter, Ungar is undefeated with a 1.38 goals against average and a remarkable 0.953 save percentage.
Ungar, 24, is a Western Canadian product coming up through the WHL before playing at the USports level and then two seasons in the ECHL.
Although he has had an unconventional development path, Ungar seems to be on track to earn an NHL opportunity at some point in the near future.
If the Oilers continue to have inconsistent goaltending in Jarry's absence then promoting Ungar and giving him a shot in the NHL could be the best option.
For now, Ungar will continue to work away in the AHL to improve and earn his dream of becoming an NHL goaltender.
