This evening, a new report from David Staples of the Edmonton Journal has connected the Oilers to two-time Stanley Cup Champion Bryan Rust. Earlier this week, reports indicated that the Edmonton Oilers could look to the Pittsburgh Penguins to add forwards Rickard Rakell and Bryan Rust. The Oilers lost a ton of forward depth this summer with the departure of Viktor Arvidsson, Corey Perry, Evander Kane and others. To this point, the Oilers have made few moves to replace these key veterans within the lineup and are reportedly keeping their options open. GM Stan Bowman has been vocal about believing in the group he has but is willing to make moves when they make sense. Tonight, Jim Matheson and David Staples of The Edmonton Journal have suggested that veteran Pittsburgh Penguins forward Bryan Rust is the best option available.
Edmonton Oilers Connected To Bryan Rust In New Report
In a new piece for The Edmonton Journal, David Staples suggested that the Oilers have Rust at the top of their wishlist. According to Staples and Jim Matheson the Oilers would love to bring Rust in but only at the right asking price. Rust has no trade protection clauses whatsoever, so he could go to any team, which has many a reporter, blogger and fan around the NHL hoping he'll end up in their city. Such speculation has spread to Edmonton, where the Edmonton Journal's Jim Matheson said the Oilers would like to acquire Rust, even if such a trade would be difficult to make. «I said they would like Rust. I didn't say anything about what they would have to give up.» - David Staples The Penguins have been the only team this summer to actively label themselves as sellers willing to get rid of top talent for future assets and young players. Rust, 33, is coming off of his best season as a Penguin with 65 points in 71 total games in 2024-25.

Loading from Twitter ...

Loading from Twitter ...

The willingness from the Penguins to deal players like Rust could lead Stan Bowman to pick up the phone and get a deal done before training camp begins. One thing remains clear, the Edmonton Oilers need to upgrade their forward corps before opening night or risk regression come Stanley Cup Playoff time. If Rust is available the Oilers have to seriously consider giving up whatever it takes to land him.
