The NHL trade deadline is approaching and the Edmonton Oilers reportedly face a difficult decision with young star Matt Savoie before Friday's deadline.
The Edmonton Oilers find themselves just barely in the Stanley Cup Playoffs needing a major jolt to become a true contender in the West.
Over the last 10 games, young star and top prospect Matt Savoie has played well providing a jump for the Oilers.
With 8 points in his last 10 games Savoie is emerging as a key piece for the Oilers on the ice.
Tonight, Savoie has continued his success with a great play leading to a Leon Draisaitl goal against the Ottawa Senators.
With his breakout, Savoie's value is at an all-time high which could lead him to be a trade candidate at the deadline later this week.
Will the Oilers cash in on Matt Savoie's sky high trade value
During this stretch of play, Savoie is finally playing up to the potential he had when selected in the top-10 by the Buffalo Sabres.
However, potential is not something the Oilers can afford to bet on staying consistent with Savoie.
The Oilers are in a win now mode and have to take advantage of every season they have with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
If Savoie can net the Oilers an impact player on defense or in goal to improve that end of the ice Edmonton must consider a move.
Savoie is a fantastic young player with a bright future but with the Oilers' current structure up front he is expendable for the right price.
With players such as Jordan Binnington and Robert Thomas potentially available on the trade market the Oilers could make a big upgrade using Savoie's value.
As the deadline approaches all eyes will be on GM Stan Bowman to see if he decides to move Savoie or bet on the young star to be an impact player down the stretch.
