The season is over for the Edmonton Oilers and the truth behind their early exit is finally out. Head coach Kris Knoblauch confirmed that captain Connor McDavid spent the first round of the playoffs playing through fractures in his foot and ankle area.
This news sheds light on why the Oilers looked a step slower against the Anaheim Ducks. The injury occurred during a collision in Game 2 when teammate Mattias Ekholm collided with the superstar.
McDavid did not miss a single game despite being a game-time decision for Games 5 and 6. He averaged 23:32 of ice time throughout the series, showing his characteristic desire to lead from the front.
However, the production was undeniably hampered by the pain. Over the six games, McDavid managed one goal and five assists for six total points. He finished the series with a -8 rating.
It was a tough series for the entire leadership group. Forward Jason Dickinson was also dealing with similar foot and ankle fractures during the series.
Both players will not require surgery and the expectation is for a full recovery before next season. It is a bitter end to a year where McDavid racked up 138 points in the regular season.
The Oilers expected a deep run after consecutive trips to the Stanley Cup Final. Losing in the opening round marks their earliest postseason exit since 2021.
Management has plenty to consider as the locker room cleans out. The focus now shifts to the offseason and healing.
The physical toll of these injuries highlights the grit required to compete in the postseason. Still, it leaves fans wondering about the ceiling of this group if they were fully healthy.
The Pacific Division remains a volatile landscape. Edmonton will need to reload and reset quickly.
The upcoming months will test the resolve of this core. They have shown resilience before but this will be a long summer in Alberta.
