Oilers insider Ryan Rishaug revealed that if Stan Bowman has the opportunity to trade Stuart Skinner tomorrow for the right offer, he would do it, no question. The Edmonton Oilers lost 3-2 to the St Louis Blues on Tuesday, blowing a two-goal lead despite a 19-save effort from backup Calvin Pickard. The rotation move gave a night off to starter Stuart Skinner, who had started three in a row. The loss extended Edmonton's slump to four defeats in their past six games and dropped their record to 6-5-3. As it usually does, the conversation after the game turned to the Oilers' goaltending situation. According to TSN's Ryan Rishaug on 'Oilers Now', general manager Stan Bowman is aggressively seeking a trade to improve the crease and won't hesitate if the right deal is available. At least for now, there doesn't seem to be an imminent solution. If a deal comes up that allows Stan Bowman to make a trade tomorrow that he knows and his gut is going to be an upgrade in net, and then [if] it involves moving on from Stuart Skinner, Rishaug said. It's done. It's done. No question. I don't think that deal is going to happen, Rishaug said. I don't think that deal is there to be had. I don't think there would be a second's hesitation to do the deal if he knew he could improve that position tomorrow. Why would he hesitate?
Connor Ingram also remains a potential option to replace Stuart Skinner as the team's #1
According to Rishaug, the Oilers are also keeping tabs on AHL goalie Connor Ingram as a potential internal fallback option. In lieu of that happening, they put a plan B in place, right? Rishaug said. They're going to see what happens in the American Hockey League with Ingram. That is a possibility, right? Let that breathe, see what that is. For now, Bowman and the coaching staff are giving Skinner more time under new goalie coach Peter Aubry, hired in September, with December and January viewed as crucial evaluation months. In the meantime, pay close attention to Skinner, Rishaug said. How is he responding to this new coach? ... Does it look like he's ready to take a step? And if, by December, January, it doesn't look like Skinner's ready to take a step, and it isn't very clear he's made improvements, ... [Bowman] He's going to have no choice.

Loading from Twitter ...

Through 14 games, Skinner has a 4-3-2 record with a 2.52 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage. Pickard sits at 2-2-1 with a 3.42 GAA and .850 save percentage. The inconsistent netminding remains an issue that's lingered well into this season for the Oilers, who fell in six games to Florida in last season's Stanley Cup Final despite a shaky performance from Skinner down the stretch. For now, Bowman seems content to remain patient. But if the struggles bleed into the new year, the Oilers may be forced to make a big move to stabilize their crease, one that could define their season.
