Following some recent events that occurred involving Jeff Skinner, an NHL insider revealed GM Stan Bowman may be pressured to have to trade him.
Which NHL players could benefit from a change of scenery because their roles or opportunities have been reduced with their current teams?
The signs are often evident: low offensive production, decreasing ice time, reduced responsibility, or an inability to seize an important position in the lineup. Sometimes players just don't fit in. Other times, they simply aren't part of the team's plan anymore.
While some big-name trade targets have already been mentioned over the last few weeks, some lesser-known players whose situations indicate a move might be possible.
Some will be dealt imminently, others during the offseason, and restricted free agents with little value won't see a qualifying offer. A few will straighten out their issues with their current clubs.
Jeff Skinner is on the chopping block
Take Jeff Skinner, for example. Signed last summer as a budget-friendly, shoot-first winger to bolster Edmonton's top six, Skinner just never developed the expected chemistry with either Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl.
His ice time has continued to shrink since the holiday break, and he hasn't logged more than 13 minutes in a game for over a month. That Skinner has struggled at all this season speaks to the limitations in his skillset.
An elite shooter and six-time 30-goal man, he's ill-suited for a bottom-of-the-lineup role. He isn't physical, nor is he a particularly effective play-driver; he requires skilled playmakers to prop him up as much as possible.
Skinner could find himself in a new environment after being uncertain about his future in Edmonton.
