Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers continue to hammer away at an extension and now we have an inside look at what the deal could look like. Over the last week, Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers have both spoken about the ongoing contract extension talks between the two sides. McDavid raised alarm bells with his comments while Stan Bowman and the front office were more than willing to be patient and let the process play out.

Loading from Twitter ...

Loading from Twitter ...

Now, just a few days before free agency begins we finally have a likely framework for what McDavid's next contract could look like.
Insider Gives A Look At What Connor McDavid's Contract Will Likely Be
In a new report for The Athletic, insider Pierre LeBrun dug into how talks are going between McDavid and the Oilers. According to LeBrun's sources, McDavid is not focused on a long-term extension and neither is his agent Judd Moldaver. Moldaver is the same agent who orchestrated Auston Matthews' four-year extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs. LeBrun expects McDavid to follow a similar mold and go for a contract in the three-year range. McDavid's agent is Judd Moldaver, who did a four-year extension for superstar Auston Matthews with the Maple Leafs two years ago. He isn't focused on eight-year max deals in all situations. And McDavid is still only 28. So a three-year deal, for instance, would put him back in an unrestricted-free-agent leverage position at 31, when he's still in his prime. - Pierre LeBrun This will likely mean that extension talks drag out longer than initially expected as the Oilers of course would prefer a long-term deal beyond four seasons. Still, all sides remain optimistic that a deal is going to get done and it is only a matter of time before the news breaks. A four-year deal for Oilers fans would not be the best news but at least extends the Oilers' Stanley Cup contention window significantly. As the situation continues to develop, we will pass along the latest reports.
